Jailbreaking your Ipod- What Does It Mean?

So you got a shiny new Ipod Touch for Christmas, and heard that you can get the Iphone apps on it but not sure where to begin? Well my friends, it’s called Jailbreaking your Ipod, and with a little help from friends Google and Youtube you will soon find yourself with an even better product than you even thought!

The basic going on is this. New Ipod Touch’s come with Firmware 1.1.2 so in order to complete the Jailbreak you will need to DOWNGRADE the firmaware back to 1.1.1 which can be downloaded from sources (use Google, and there are a number of Youtube guides that will run you through the process and give you links). Once this has been completed you will also need to run the Jailbreak app on your PC or Mac (I used a Mac to complete my Jailbreak) and a good 15 minutes and 3 or 4 restarts later you will be able to get your Ipod to update back to Firmware 1.1.2

So now you will be taken back to your springboard and should notice two new apps, OpenSSH and Installer. Click on installer and using your WiFi it will open up a program that has pretty much EVERY app you will ever need. Here you can install all the beloved Iphone apps including Google Maps, weather, stocks, Mail and all that which work as intended, I especially love the mail app :)

BUT then there are another group of cool apps such as Ebooks, Sketch, Apollo (fills in all you IM needs with MSN, Yahoo, AIM and ICQ) and my two favourite apps Summerboard and MobileScrobbler

Summerboard changes the springboard from the plain back background to anything you want in the way of sexy looking themes!

Mobile Scrobbler is a program for LastFM users. Insert your information and it will scrobble your plays directly to your site. If you are in a non WiFi area it’s ok, MobileScrobbler will just queue your songs and when you connect to your WiFi will update you page for you!

All in all, Jailbreaking your Ipod opens up a world of possibilities that make it an even better device!

Okay, so how much space does it exactly take up on the Ipod? and if you want games and what not on it, do those take up space also? What about AIM? I find a lot of articles about how to jailbreak it, but they don’t give much information bout what exactly you can put onto the ipod and if it’s going to take up a lot of space…I had a friend that hacked his Ipod touch (8 gb) just like mine…and he has numerous games on it that took up NO space at all….and also was able to change the colors and everything on it. Does Jailbreak allow us to do that ?

    Lots of questions I know..sorry

hi i plan on getting a ipod touch for my birthday(in a couple days) and I was thinking about jailbreaking it…when you jailbreak it do you get apps you can only get by jailbreaking it or just all the apps that you “can” get officially. Also im pretty sure its ellegal. Is it, im not saying i’ll rat you…im saying that i already have homebrew on my wii which is ellegal, i use limewire, and bit torrents…i dont want to take too many chances…any help at all would be nice. thx!

      Hey James,

Jailbreaking isn’t illegal it’s just frowned upon by Apple. Your warranty will be void if you go through with it, but if anything does go wrong chances are you can restore the firmware to the original apple firmware anyway.

If you hold out a few more days I will update a step by step guide to Jailbreak and iPod Touch/iPhone 3G.

As for apps, you can still purchase and use apps from the official app store, but there is also a “store” called Cydia which has all the jailbroken apps for download

Apps on the Apple Store are still going to cost you, but there are a lot of great and free applications out there for you with a jailbroken iPod. Don’t be scared to try my friend, you can always go back to the Apple Approved Firmware!

      Good luck!

I have just bought a Jailbroken Touch off ebay and not actually sure what it means. I only want to listen to music really on it and play the odd game. Does it mean that because it is jailbroken, I can download music and games and put on the touch for free? Instead of paying for songs etc off Itunes?

    Thanks
